Omen by Daniel Blokh

My aunt is tearing open an apricot
at the table
when her finger
slips, slides across the smooth fruit

and lets the deep brown pit fall out
and tumble to the floor. No one at the table notices
but me and her, her eyes
dropping down for a second then
glancing away,
but her hands lingering,

the finger bent into a grasping crook
around that unexpected absence of

space,
the sudden air.
